What's Your Digestive System IQ?

The gastrointestinal system (also known as the gut or digestive tract)
is a system of muscular tubes lined with mucus for protection.

The upper portion consists of (most importantly) the mouth and the
stomach. When food hits your stomach, hydrochloric acid (HCL) starts
breaking down your food into usable nutrients. It also kills toxins
like mold and bacteria that cause trouble. This HCL is your first line
of defense.

Then, it heads to the small intestines so those essential nutrients can
be absorbed and transported to muscles and organs to keep them running

The small intestine is lined with a mucosal layer. This layer acts as

provides a slippery conduit for food to travel easily through the
system. It's your body's second defensive barrier.

It is porous enough to allow protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins,
minerals and water to pass through to keep you vital and healthy.

The mucosal layer is also the front gate to your immune system.

The last line of defense in this process is the 400 different species
of bacteria (called flora) that live in your digestive tract. Both good
bacteria and bad bacteria. Trillions of these microorganisms call your
digestive system home. In a healthy system, there are about 80% "good"
bacteria that keep the "bad" bacteria in constant check.

After your digestive tract takes what your body needs, the rest moves
to the large intestine for removal. When the waste leaves your body,
it's known as stool.

In a healthy balanced system, stool comes out in solid form and stays
intact when it hits the water of your toilet.

What Happens When Things Go Haywire

Diarrhea is a symptom of another underlying problem of one of your
three lines of defense. It's an alarm that some part of this delicate
system is out of balance.

There are two kinds of diarrhea, acute and chronic.

Acute diarrhea is isolated and only lasts three, maybe seven days.

Chronic diarrhea can last weeks, months, and in my case years.
